The 33rd Annual International Optimist Regatta, hosted by the St. Thomas Yacht Club, is a unique signature event that’s sure to delight kids and families, sailors and non-sailors alike.
Young sailors, ages 8-15, from around the world assemble at St. Thomas and Cowpet Bay to take part in racing small single-sailed dinghies, also known as optimists.
This eight-day event will highlight training sessions, TOTE clinics (sponsored by TOTE Maritime), a regatta, awards ceremonies, including a Father’s Day barbecue, and other family activities.
Racing is best viewed from the beach near the yacht club or from a chartered local boat in the bay.
In addition, pick up refreshments and snacks from the yacht club, then sit back, relax, and enjoy watching the young sailors race.
All of these activities focus on developing and refining skills in racing tactics, mastering large-fleet starts, and improving boat-handling skills.
Also, clinics offer knowledge-building for sailors ranging from beginners to advanced juniors, according to TOTE Maritime.
Clinics will be hosted by leading experts, including national team instructors.
